Capabilities

The capabilities of the Food Industries Center are unique and not found elsewhere in the state. The FIC has one of the few academic food pilot plants in the United States capable of complete end-to-end processing. Raw commodities can be processed to finished, packaged goods ready for consumption or storage. This was a major specification by the U.S. Army when they selected this site for their cold preservation technology research and development. The FIC will help bring the resources of The Ohio State University to the food industry and food business entrepreneurs of Ohio. These resources include three fully equipped pilot plants for fruits, vegetables, and cereal processing; dairy processing; and meat processing. In addition, the expertise of the faculty and staff of the Ohio State's Department of Food Science and Technology will be more readily accessible to businesses and entrepreneurs. Finally, needs that cannot be addressed within the Food Science Department may be addressed by other colleges and departments within the Ohio State network.
